Assign 5-1

One issue that affects our culture daily is pollution. There are many forms of pollution that affect our lives on a daily basis. Air pollution is very harmful to our society. According to a recent article in USA Today, the industrial pollution of our air surrounding our schools is a huge problem that needs to be addressed. USA Today analyzed samples of air near 95 schools. The findings of this analysis were not good as 64 school locations had “elevated levels of toxic chemicals” (Morrsion, B. & Heath, B.).
The levels of toxins are extremely harmful to our children. Senator Barbara Boxer of California has a committee that watches over the EPA. She promised to change the policy concerning the air surrounding our childrens’ schools. At present, there is no policy requiring the EPA to monitor airway near schools. Senator Boxer goes on to call the problem “a shocking event of child neglect” (Morrsion, B. & Heath, B.).
Senator Boxer goes on to say that "What's really disturbing is, if USA TODAY can do this, certainly the EPA can do this," (Morrsion, B. & Heath, B.). Two states that were included in this study were Ohio and Pennsylvania. Ohio’s EPA representative states that his agency will do what ever they can to remedy this situation” (Morrsion, B. & Heath, B.).

Assign. 5-2

The superhero character of Spiderman has been a classic for decades. Spiderman used to be a favorite cartoon as well as a comic book. Today, the superhero of Spiderman fills our movie theaters as he has made it to the big screen. Tobey Maguire plays the role of Spiderman nowadays. He plays the geek role of Peter Parker. His love interest is Kirsten Dunst who plays the aspiring actress with an abusive home life, M. J. Watson.
At first, the viewer thinks that the formulas of this move are common. The first one being the geek nice guy gets the pretty girl. Peter Parker is kind of a cute, average guy that fell in love with the pretty girl next door when she first moved in. She was the pretty popular gal that didn’t pay much attention to him, other than being cordial to him. During their high school years, she dated the jock football player who always cracked on Peter. Peter was the nerd that always missed the bus and he was a marvelous science whiz. See Figure 1.

SPIDERMAN Page 3
Figure 1. Peter Parker waving at M.J. when she was waving at the girls behind him.
Unfortunately for Peter, he was genuinely nice, but that was all he could offer to M.J.
The school field trip to the science museum changed Peter Parker’s life forever. As they visited the spider exhibits, Peter was bitten by an odd species of a spider. He became ill at first and ironically he woke up with “super powers”. He was muscular and physically fit. Mysteriously, he was also able to shoot webs from his wrists. This was the beginning of “the human spider” nka Spiderman. See Figure 2.

Figure 2 SPIDERMAN
This part of the movie was ironic as now the geek, Peter Parker, was starting to be a hero in the movie. As a viewer, I thought the formula had changed and felt that he was now
SPIDERMAN Page 4

becoming the hero and the hero always gets the girl.
Each action movie, there is generally a hero and a villan. In this scenario, Spiderman was the hero and the Green Goblin was the villan. The formula for this movie was invention. Although this movie had the conventional hero and villan, the specifics and details of this move are wide and varied. This movie kept you in suspense.
The formulas of the good/bad with the heroes and villans have been around for decades. Years ago one can remember when the movies were about cowboys and Indians. Then it became cops and robbers. Now it is superheroes and villans. The formulas of yesterday still appear in movies today.
The movie Spiderman was a classical movie with a hero and villan; however, this movie takes an interesting twist at the end that simply leaves the viewer in a state of “what is next”. Towards the end of the movie, the viewer can pick up on an obvious chemistry between Spiderman and M.J. See Figure 3.

Figure 3 Spiderman and M.J. after he saves her.
SPIDERMAN Page 5

As Peter Parker and as Spiderman, he has been in love with her since he laid eyes on her. M.J., on the other hand, didn’t fall for Peter until he was Spiderman and became her hero. As a viewer, I assumed that at the end of the movie, once she found out that the love of her life, Spiderman, was also the boy next door, Peter Parker, that she would be with him. He already adored her, so the viewer thinks it will work. Or will it?
Near the end of the movie, M.J. confesses that while her life was in danger, her thoughts were of him. He is what kept her going. She even confessed that she loved him.
So the viewer thinks that finally, she admits her love for him, he loves her and they will live happily ever after. At that moment is when the movie left everyone hanging. After they kissed, he walks away after telling her all he can give her is friendship. The viewers are flabbergasted. What was he thinking!
Peter’s uncle had previously told Peter that a man with power is a man with a lot of responsibility. Peter interpreted that in way that puts him as a hero responsible for helping people with his special power and that comes before all else. Peter states that “this is my gift and this is my curse” as he walks away from the love of his life.

Myth Analysis

The scholarly meaning of the word myth is a “traditional story”. The word mythology means a folklore that a certain culture believes to be true. Mythology also refers to a branch of knowledge dealing with the study of myths (Mythology).
Romantic love is a social construction specific to Western Culture (Bartels, A. & Zeki, S.). Romantic love is characteristically directed towards a single person (Bartels, A. & Zeki, S.). Romantic love myths involve being erotic, cognitive, emotional and behavioral components (Bartels, A. & Zeki, S.).
The romance level surrounding Valentine’s Day is very significant during the month of February. Lovers around the world have been exchanging Valentine cards, flowers and chocolates with each other on February 14th, for a long time (Couto, T.). Perhaps this is the one day out of the year when we all fall for the myth of romance. The myth of St. Valentine’s Day states that if you stare at the star filled sky long enough, that you will see Cupid’s arrow of love and desire sailing through the air going to an unsuspecting target (Couto, T.). St. Valentine’s Day is actually the day Priest Valentine was declared a saint in 496 by Pope Gelasius, and February 14 became his feast day (Couto, T.).
A more contemporary version of the romance myth is in a song by Keith Urban. Keith Urban is a popular country-pop music singer in his thirties that is extremely popular with the younger and middle aged groups. The particular song I have chosen is titled, Once in a Lifetime. During the time in which this song became popular, Keith was just married to his wife Nicole Kidman, so love and romance was in the air.

Mythology Page 3
The song starts out singing about the visual component of romantic love. The song states “I can see it in your eyes…” It has been stated that one of the first stages of the romance component is being erotic. This song depicts that and goes on to say “feel it in your touch…I know that your scared.” The cognitive component of the verses of the song says that “if anyone can make it, I’m bettin’ on me and you.” I chose this song as it starts from the first initial phases of a relationship and moves through the next phases of relationship, all wrapped up in one piece of art.
In the middle of this song, the myth of this romantic relationship goes into the next phase and the following verse describes that, “Sayin ‘I do’ and they’re throwing the rice in our hair.” This song evolves into standing next to someone and saying I do at a wedding ceremony. One can sit and listen to this song and mentally picture this relationship developing. The relationship further grows and includes the following “Well the first one’s born. And a brother comes along, And he’s got your smile.” The romance has evolved into a committed relationship and the couple have started a family.
The romantic myth that enhances this song is intriguing. In my opinion, this song is a perfect example of a contemporary romantic myth. See Figure 1 to view a photograph of the couple and the entire song lyrics.

Once In A Lifetime lyrics

...Mm hmm

I can see it in your eyes
And feel it in your touch
I know that you're scared
But you've never been this loved (mm hmm)

It's a long shot, baby,
I know it's true.
But if anyone can make it,
I'm bettin' on me and you. (mm hmm)

Just keep on moving into me,
I know you're gonna see
The best is yet to come

And don't fear it now,
We're going all the way.
That sun is shining on a brand new day.
It's a long way down
And it's a leap of faith
But we're never giving up
Cuz i know we've got a once in a lifetime love

Everybody's looking
For what we've found
Some wait their whole life
And it never comes around. (uu huhh)

So don't hold back now.
Just let go of all you've ever known
You can put your hand in mine.

And don't fear it now,
We're going all the way.
That sun is shining on a brand new day.
It's a long way down
And it's a leap of faith
But we're never giving up
Cuz i know we've got a once in a lifetime love

I close my eyes and i see you standing right there
Sayin 'i do' and they're throwing the rice in our hair.
Well the first one's born
And a brother comes along,
And he's got your smile.
I've been looking back on the life we had
I'm still by your side.

So don't fear it now,
We're going all the way.
That sun is shining on a brand new day.
It's a long way down
And it's a leap of faith
But I'm never givin up
Cuz i know we've got a once in a lifetime love.

Romantic love myths are sometimes just that “myths”. We watch TV and see the absolutely worst two people getting married and there simply is no romance and it is just wrong. According to White Knights, Glass Slippers and Other Romantic Myths, in reality women really do fall for the whole romantic myths mindset and think romantic notions are proof of love (Leffew, J., 2008). The fact of the matter is that the majority of men love their significant others but do unfortunately do not think or act romantically

Mythology Page 5
(Leffew, J., 2008). On the other hand, we see romantic myths that proceed full circle and actually turn into meaningful relationships, such as Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman.
